Empow, an Israeli cybersecurity startup, has raised $9 million to open a new Boston office and boost its planned expansion in North America. The company declined to name the investors.

The Boston office will cover sales and support operations. The company said it currently has four beta customers in North America and one in Europe in the finance, healthcare, telecoms, and transportation sectors.

According to empow, enterprises are “over-investing” in complex security tools that can’t keep up with evolving threats. The startup’s “security abstraction” platform breaks down an organisation’s security configuration into components called “Security Particles”, which are then monitored via deep learning for threats and how these components interact with each other.

“Our security abstraction is creating a radical change in the realm of cybersecurity, making cyber-defences exponentially better than the sum of their parts,” said empow CEO Avi Chesla. “It’s like a cyber general coordinating your security army: empow helps sends the right troops into battle at the right time.”
